I believe Ronald Reagan won because he was in touch with the American people, or at least made them feel he was.

Despite his illness and his progressive memory (etc) loss, Reagan was a smart guy and he was always very popular. Did you know that he was voted President of the Screen Actors Guild twice, even though he was an outspoken anti-Communist? That says two things to me: a) that he was well-liked across the board, and b) they must have thought he was a capable leader. Did you also know that he is consistently considered to be California's best-ever governor, despite the fact that California has always been liberal-leaning?

I don't think that Reagan was the best ever US president, but I think he was a capable one, and had this likeability that was even attractive to America's enemies (with the possible exception of Gadaffi - I'd hate someone who gave the order for the attack which killed my infant daughter, too).

He won because he ran against the worst president of the century. The country was embarrassed by Iran. There were lines for gas and 20% mortgage rates.Carter lost that election more then Reagon won it.Lucky for us in my opinion.
