Buy him 40 different things. They don't have to be expensive and can be silly. You could get a couple of decent ones to throw in there like a CD, tie, tickets for show, dinner etc but the rest can just be silly things!

Check out - firebox.co.uk and iwantoneofthose.com, lots of cool ideas for different types of people. I shopped quite well through these at christmas.
A couple of suggestions that have down well for fathers - BYO bags, can get wine or beer ones - Don't break the bottle (he still hasn't opened a year later!).
