Because they choose to be ignorant. They choose to fear what's different, or they want to stupidly think like their ancestors and say they're superior or something...

Because sad to say most whites still buy into racial superiority, and everyone likes to feel better than the other guy. I feel so bad for you. Of all the reasons someone could choose not to like you, it has to be about something so silly as what color you came out to be. We have so many dividers up its a wonder that anyone gets along with anyone else. This aids what I call the sheep effect. You will see it in action when not only people of the same race stick together, but same heritage, same income, same sexual orientation. Its awful, and disgusting, and so very limiting. My suggestion to you is to be safe. I'm not trying to freak you out, but if you had the bad luck to move into a racist neighborhood, well, I guess I'd be worried about my safety. Stay true to your identity, and look for a new place. Not that racists should win, but do you want to try to change the minds of people who learned to discriminate on the knee of their granpappy Billy Bob? Good luck!

No one knows you yet. Just act in a self respecting manner, and don't go overboard approaching people. Americans have a need for more space (arms length) when conversing. If the area is very racial, all you can do is be yourself, and look for a more comfortable neighborhood to live in. Be aware that foreign black people will face the same problems in black American neighborhoods. College areas are most receptive to different cultures.

Just ignore the racist ones, and be yourself. America is a diverse country, not any of us are alike, not all whites shun blacks... not all blacks shun whites... Mainly being in America is about respecting other's differences and finding a common ground.

Mostly, "white " americans do not want to deal with "blacks". It is somewhat institutionalized, though not as preval;ent as it was twenty, thirty or fifty years ago. You must simply remember that we are all human and we are all neighbors, and we should love our neighbors.

In my experience, you just need to make friends. I have the advantage of being a member of the Baha'i Faith, so I naturally associate with people of many different faiths and backgrounds.

Really , it is because they don't know how. They have been fed stereotypes their entire lives and fear any type of change.
Just be yourself and don't conform to what they want you to be, let them assimilate to you.
