I'm sorry, but the first answer doesnt give you the whole story. The actual city of Fort Myers is about 50% minority and low-income with fairly high crime rate. Surrounding communities are fairly nice.
Cape Coral and South Fort Myers are both safe and reasonable.
The majority of crime occurs in the 33901, 33905, and 33916 zip codes.

Ft Myers is nice. I live about an hour from there. it's a fairly big city, with lots of retirees. there's about the same amount of crime there as any city that size. there's lots to do and nice beaches. things are more crowded closer to the gulf and more spread out the farther you go from the coast.
