Perhaps it is just in your genetic disposition to have large babies. Some women are naturally unlucky to have such large babies.
If you had a really large placenta, that might be another reason why. The baby was getting bombarded with nutrients and vitamins so of course it is going to grow. Be thankful you had a healthy baby!

Personal weight gain really doesn't influence your child's weight. Unless maybe you didn't gain enough. Most likely this is just the genetic combination your child was given and you were blessed enough to only have a small weight gain. Another possibility that may be the case if you didn't know you were pregnant right away or have early prenatal care or an early U/S before 12 weeks, is that your pregnancy may have been a little further than thought. U/S before 12 weeks generally have only a small margin of error in estimating your newborn's size. The earlier the U/S the smaller the margin. Because babies vary so much in growth after the first trimester u/s can be as much as 2 weeks off in any direction and sometimes a little more.

My daughter was almost 12 pounds, she was massive. I did gain about 70 pounds though, but i don't have diabetes or anything. I think some babies are just meant to be bigger, I have heard that having a large baby can mean you are at an increased risk of developing diabetes later on. My daughter was also 2 weeks late that could have made a difference as well.

Large babies are a precurser to the mother being diabetic. Keep your eye on your sugars and carbs. If you develop those habit, you may be able to avoid getting sick and if you do it will be easier to control the illness. My mom had five kids and each was larger than the last until she had one over 12 lbs. Can you imagine? She was pretty young when she became an insulin dependant diabetic. I thnk you will find information about it on line. Good Luck and God Bless

Some babies are just big. I had an almost 10 pounder myself. It's got a lot to do with genetics. What's really amazing is that you only gained 17 pounds with it!!!! I gained 70 (Agghh!) and am still battling it off a year later. Good luck with the little one!

I weighed 9lbs at birth, and was only one day late. My mother had no indication that I would be above average, and to this day (I am 21 years of age), I remain slightly underweight and quite thin.
Sometimes babies are just large. At least the high weight increases the chances of the baby being healthy, provided there are no underlying problems.
