I am 12 weeks and I am um, constantly itchy downstairs. Is it safe to use yeast infection treatments while you are pregnant?

Another question. Is it safe to have Activia Yogurt while pregnant? You know the one with the special bacteria for your intestines. Has anyone ate it during their pregnancy and had no problems.
Thank you very much.

I will be honest up front I'm not sure about the Activia (although I imagine it's safe) but ask your provider to be sure..As for the itchies,so long as you KNOW it's a yeast infection, yes it's safe to treat but my doc always recommended the 7-day treatment...I know it's a pain to do for a whole week, but it's gentler than the 1 and 3 day kinds.

All probiotics are perfectly safe during pregnancy.

Most over the counter yeast infection treatments are safe only in the 3 or 7 day treatments, or the 1 day ones just don't work. I've heard both. Just ask the pharmacist... though you sound like you might have trouble discussing that with a pharmacist. If you would rather speak to someone on the phone then you can call Motherisk.org, dial a 10-10 long distance plan and it will cost you less than $2. All they do is study information on safety of everything during pregnancy and lactation.

Motherisk's Home Line - (416) 813-6780 - for information about the risk or safety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, chemicals, x-rays, chronic disease and infections during pregnancy. [This is a toll call to our call centre. Callers may have to wait up to 10 minutes to speak to a counsellor.]

These Helplines are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

You are much more likely to get yeast infections while pregnant, double check with your OB or midwife before using an over the counter treatment. In most cases they have you get some monistat, but some times they want to see you an monitor you to make sure its not more advanced than normal.

As for the yogurt, I havent heard anything about it. Eating fiber and good veggies, and eating regular yogurt will do the same thing. I wouldnt personally think twice about eating it myself whie pregnant, but I cannot advise you one way or another. Check with your OB when you call about the yeast infection.

Most Pregnant women get a yeast infection when they are pregnant . I would tell your doctor,so he can get you the right meds for you that won't hurt the baby in the process.
I would also talk to the doctor about the yogurt as well.Just to make sure :)

Search for 'Activia' on motherisk.org -- it's actually mentioned there.

(Yes, go ahead and have yogurt. I was eating that for a bit, but decided the inferior taste and texture just wasn't worth it.)

It sounds like you have a yeast infection. But, you should TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR FIRST.

Some over the counter items specify, DO NOT USE WHEN PREGNANT.

Don't put anything in your vagina when pregnant before you clear it with your doctor. And I would ask about the yogurt.
