What field of Information Technology should I go into and would it do me any good to get an AS Degree?

Get into network security. I would see if your local community college is offering any type of degree in network security. This (security) is the next big thing in IT. IT security makes up the majority of my department's budget for this year (FY 2007). Also get your CISSP certification. Good luck.

BTW, web developers are a dime a dozen.

If you have an option, I recommend Educational Technology. A lot of schools are starting to seek experts in the field to help them get technology effectively into classrooms.
