1/w + 7 = - 4

1/w + 7 - 7 = - 1 - 7

1/w = - 11

w(1/w) = - 11(w)

1 = - 11w

1/ - 11 = - 11w / - 11

- 1/11 = w

1/w + 7 = -4

Take 7 from both sides

1/w = -11

Multiply by w

1 = -11w

So w = -1/11

Putting back into the original equation:

1/ (-1/11) + 7 = -4

Goes to

-11 + 7 = -4 which is true.

Phew! This is tricky because you are looking at the inverse of a fraction - that was the bit that foxed me, 1 divided by -1/11 actually equals -11

:-)

First get rid of the plus 7:

1/w = -4 -7

1/w = -11

Then multiply each side by what's on the bottom (which is w):

(w) x 1/w = (w) x -11

The w's on the left cancel each other out:

1 = w - 11

Put the -11 on the other side to leave w by itself:

1 + 11 = w

12 = w

Therefore, w = 12.
