Hi,You would check the engine oil with the engine off and cold,if you just turned it off, give it about 5 minutes so all the oil that is in the upper areas of engine can get back down into oil pan, this will give you the most accurate reading. As for transmission, you would do this with car running and in park[set the parking brake, just for safety]There should be warm/cold level indicator lines on dipstick,if you just started car,use cold line,if you have been recently driving car,use warm.Hope this helped you.

You have an "obstruction motor" which means when the timing belt breaks the valves will hit the pistons (which you already know). Since you replaced the head and had it pressure tested beforehand I would guess it's not the problem. You could have cracked the block, or improperly installed the head, causing oil to leak into the water jackets and or combustion chambers. The only other thing I can think of is: did you flush out the radiator and engine block before you replaced the head? Could be some residual oil left over from when the timing belt first broke. You could also have broken a piston, causing oil to get into the combustion chamber. If the smoke is white, it is most likely coolant, and if it is a grayish blue it is most likely oil burning off.

Engine oil should be checked cold with the engine off. Transmission fluid should be checked with the transmission warm and the vehicle running (except Honda/Acura, they should be checked warm with the vehicle off). Transmission fluid is usually checked when the vehicle is in parkd, but on some makes its checked in Neutral (Dodge trucks).Best time to check the engine oil is in the morning before the vehicle has been started, and the transmission is best checked after driving for 5 or more minutes to warm the transmission up. Check the owners manual for the proper procedures if you are unsure. Thats what its there for.

Oil is checked when it is cold and not running. The tranny usually warm and running while it is in Park, but for the tranny you should check your owner's manual as sometimes the procedure is different on cars.

Oil when the car is off and has cooled down, you don't want to burn yourself. Tranny, car on and in park.
