I had a compaq and was very dissatisfied with it. A couple of my friends also had compaq and each one of us had problems. So I would not recommend this brand.

Buy a macbook. I could write a novel here, but the basic gist is this: for $1300 you get a machine that does twice the work of a windows machine at half or a quarter of the trouble. It has MS Office for Mac (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc) and far more software and functionality built into it out of the box.

Acer is just sweet. Even their cheap notebooks are very reliable. Have used them at a lot of clients.
Toshiba's decent too, (but has degraded some in the last few years) and Panasonic ToughBooks are nice if you want something highly durable.
Stay away from Dell and Compaq....seriously.

toshiba, in my experience, makes the most rugged and dependable laptops out there. I have one 6 years old in my closet at home, with hundreds of hours of use, it's been dropped a couple of times, and it still works like it was new.
