I have a 1994 Explorer, and it has been making really loud kind of grinding noise under the front seats. Seems like sometimes my brakes sort of won't go, they make this humming noise and its kinda like they locked up and I'm still rolling, but I don't know if that is the case. Also, I'm having to press in the brake pedal more to stop at times now. I hope it's not as bad as it seems, I dont have much for money. What's wrong with my car?

I'm assuming the Explorer is a 4X4.
Yes, defiantly your brakes need attention.
The piston in each of your calipers sound like they are frozen.
Replace your rotors, calipers & brake pads.
While the rotors have been removed it would be a good time to inspect & repack the wheel bearings.
Inspect the front driveline u-joints, tierod ends, & upper & lower ball joints.
If the front brake are in need of repair, pull the rear drums & inspect the rear brakes as well.
Expect at a bare minimum $500 +

I like this $500 bit. To me, that is what it would cost if you take it to the rip off brake places. I have a 92 Ford Explorer and it ran about $20 to replace the front pads. And then $11 to get both rotors turned. It runs around $38 to buy one new rotor if you need one. I already had brake fluid, so front brakes was only $33 to replace and turned rotors. Price at the rip off places like 5 times more.

Now if you do the pads yourself, buy a cheap C clamp at the $1 store. Then you do not have to worry about bleeding the brakes. Also for future reference, buy a Haynes Repair Manual for you year and model to help diagnose and show you how to do repairs too, when you get the money.

You could get away with $20 to change the brake pads. And if you have the money get the rotors changed.

Also, this is for a 2 WD, The 4wd has the tranny underneath the seat. So disengage this is you can.

if your hearing grinding sound you need to stop driving it. Yeah if you get to the point where grinding sounds come from your car when you apply the brake then might be that your brakes are touching metal. You probably need new brake pads but if you keep driving it you'll need more then that b/c you damage the rotors and the disk brakes. You can save money by changeing the front brakes yourself but If you can't it be best to buy your own pads and then take it to the shop to have them install it. Remember that most likely its just the front pads that need replacing.
