So we all have our opinions weather we smoke or not. People want them to be illegal, and our gov't just keeps taxing the crap out of them to make them less affordable so we'll stop. Here's a thought, why hasn't the gov't stepped in and made illegal all the other crap besides tobacco that get put into them? After all, do you think they would be as much as a health risk if they didn't have all the chemicals the tobacco companies put in there? I don't think they'd be nearly as addictive either.

PPS to leogirl, the question was about the added chemicals, not smoking itself - pay attention to the questions people...

The tobacco industry has survived precisely for the reason you mention. Their product is addictive and the more addictive they are the more they will sell. They manipulate the product and make it as desirable as possible to ensure that they will have buyers tomorrow.
If they did make a product that was safer and less addictive people would be able to stop smoking easier, and that means lost revenue for the tobacco company.

the real problem is how would the government and the tobacco companies replace the revenue from the sale of tobacco, if the government really wanted me to quit, they would have taken the HUMPTY-NINE million dollar settlement they got from the Tobacco industry and made it easy for me to get help to quit, all the $39 nicorret gum and $400 chantix and $150 inhailer would be passed out on the corner and I'd be done, as it is they had me hooked for 40 somthing years and now I'M THE BAD GUY and need to pay!
I guess I'm bitter...NEVER LIGHT ONE!

They are all incahoots together! You said it right....they keep taxing the heck out of them and people who are addicted keep buying them! Even if they were 10 bucks a pack, the addicts will buy them. The government is right in on this money making scheme with these big tobacco companies! It's ridiculous.

As I light up my smoke...I am thinking this is an good question. The real problem with making tobacoo illiegal is that people need drugs; there is NO civilization in history that did not have drug abuses. NADA

This is one of the few drugs that acutally calm you down if you need to or stimulate you. I know too many people that use to smoke and now drink much much more....they self medicate with booze. I would rather people did not turn to another drug.

This has become some sort of witch hunt in the States.

Addictions are just a state of mind. I quit cold turkey from a 2 pack a day 25 year habit. Cigarette smoking should be left up to the individual. If you can afford the cigarettes and afford the health care that is needed due to smoke related health problems then I say go for it. Just don't smoke around me. The smell is god awful. I am still to this day embarrassed at how I must have smelled. Quit blaming everyone and everything else for your addiction. You are the one in control, not the cigarette or its chemicals.

Oh, yeah. They would still be just as addictive. They do not concentrate the nicotine content. They would not be as bad for you if the chemical content was brought down, but they would still be dangerous.

The problem is that the government cannot legislate morality.

They tried it with prohibition, they are trying it with the so called war on drugs.

that is well put...however no matter what, inhaling smoke into your lungs no matter what is in it is going to be horrible for you....and if you take away the nicotine, you know that calming feeling you get when you smoke? that is the nicotine that causes that...so it wouldn't do anything for you...

i don't really care if people smoke, as long as it's not around me or small children..if people want to die early, no skin off my back....i just don't want to breath that crap in..

They will never ban tobacco.....they wouldn't be able to replace the billion tax dollars generated.

I think the less the government "steps in" the better.
