McCarthy seeking out Communists, even innocent. Turning anyone into Communists. Turning brother against brother...American against American. People are divided and scared.
Bush seeking out terrorists, even creating the Patriot Act to seek out terrorists. Turning anyone into potential terrorists (ie. don't support the war). Turning brother against brother. Turning Americans against Americans. People are divided and scared.
Too similar, no?

McCarthy was more blatant and indiscriminate in his verbal attacks. He did not spare powerful institutions such as the Army and hence, his downfall.
McCarthy also did not have the support of a core group that'd stay with him no matter what. Bush did and does (even now, over 30% of our people still support Bush. McCarthy had no such base).

I don't think they are very similar. Tailgunner Joe was not trying to seize control over the American people as a whole by betrayal of the constiutional principles on which this country was founded.
A better analogy would be Bush with the Nazi Party when they came to power in 1933. Like Bush, they believed they were doing God's work and saw themselves as divinely called to impose their views on everybody. They scared the people into submission with talk of terrorists. They said Christianity was the foundation of the German state and sould be taught in schools. When their Supreme Court displeased them in the verdict after the Reichstag Fire, they announced that the liberal judges should be replaced.

There are vague similarities in the rhetoric to be sure, but unlike Bush, McCarthy actively sought out American citizens in order to assassinate their characters, deprive them of their livelihoods as well as their civil rights not just because of their politicial affiliations or beliefs, but also people who associated with people with Communist leanings. He blackmailed people into turning in their friends.
McCarthy was a "terrorist" in the real sense of the term.
Bush is quite different. Although he does not like those who disagree with him and often infers they are less than patriots, he doesn't misuse his position to systematically hunt down these people and destroy them, their families, the friends and their colleagues, as McCarthy and his cronies did.
McCarthyism forced numbers of Americans to flee the country in order to continue to work, whereas Bush's ideological protractors can live, work and speak freely inside the United States.

Last year or the year before documents were de-classifed from Russia that showed Old Joe was right. It took a long time for the truth to come out. Many brought before the House Un-American Activies Committe were commies. If my neighbor has another loud party that last all night I might turn against him. Maybe we can get Reda to give George spelling lessons.

This is exactly why the patriot act is so hotly debated by those who value freedoms. WHY political parties should not give talking points to the media; nor should they be allowed to co-mingle their funds in any way shape or form. THIS IS WHY there are recluse rules which are not being followed. Our checks have deminished way to much for any balance.

Both are based on ignorance and fear. Both look to question the patriotism of those who disagree. Both are not or were not made accountable to give specific information about charges, just name call. And both McCarthy and Bush are alcoholics....Terror is the new communism..Use fear to control the sheep when you have no ideas for progress.

No. The Patriot Act is nothing like McCarthyism. Believe it or not, terorists are a danger to the US (and any democratic nation for that matter).

There seems to be an underlying layer of totalitarianism in Republicanism.
Their insistence that we give up liberty for security is a most troubling aspect of Rightist politics.

Without communists to hunt down, neoconservatives had shifted their sites to another harmless enemy within, the dreaded liberal. Neoconservatives, small minds doing big things.
