Well I am an Oiler fan and have been for years and years. Yes the trade was a good one.. but not for Lowe and the Oilers... It was a good trade for Smyth. I'm happy to see Smyth somewhere where he may actually win something after all these years of struggling in Edmonton. He's a hard working old school hockey player and he certainly deserves to be on a contender... something the Oilers haven't been for a long time and won't be for a long time to come.

I'm not saying Smyth will win the Cup in New York but he has a better shot with them than with the Oil and he hopefully can sign a free agent deal with a team in the summer that puts him on a consistent contender.

I also will say this.. no I don't think Smyth is really worth 6 million either... but he was the heart and soul of the Oilers and
that type of player is VERY hard to replace on a team... don't think that the current 6 game losing streak in which they've only scored 5 goals is a coincidence either... it's a team playing without any heart or deep desire... it's been sucked out of them. This is a team that has very modest levels of talent and can only compete well when everyone on the team is working hard and dedicated to a team goal of playing the best as a team. That spirit is gone and I can't see the players getting that back under current managament.

Should Lowe be fired? Well the old excuse in the pre-cap NHL was that the Oilers never had enough money and could never truly ice a contender because all their best talent always walked away when they got too good to be supported by the Oilers budget. That's still the case sad to say... cap or no cap.

I personally think the Oilers did well all those years just squeaking into the playoffs with fairly limited talent. They worked hard with what they had and did the best they could. At some point though... loyal fans deserve a team that can actually contend and that can compete day in and day out and at the start of the year you know they have a legitimate shot at going far in the playoffs.

I don't think the Oilers fans have that feeling any more and I think it's time for a change. Lowe and MacTavish should both go as well as the entire "old boy" network in Edmonton. They have done their bit and tried their best and yes the tradition of the Oilers franchise is strong and they are part of it... but sometimes fresh blood and fresh ideas and attitudes have their place as well.

It's time for some major changes in Edmonton... it started with the Smyth trade and it has to continue with Lowe, MacTavish and the rest of the Oilers management.

Kevin Lowe commited a nessisary evil in trading Ryan Smyth. Smyth was demanding about 6 million dollars with 20 minutes left before the trade deadline. If the Oilers had not traded him, he would have been lost through free agency this summer. Lowe made the best deal he could for the future of the team.

Smyth is a great player, but he is not worth over 6 million dollars. He is an All-Star but he is not an elite kind of player. He is a hard worker and will be missed but the Oilers didn't ned to be paying him 6 million a year still when he is 36.

Lowe won't be fired. 80% of fans understand this trade and agree it is for the best.

He probably should be fired. Oiler teams have not been all that great lately--even the team that made it to the Finals was not to good in the regular season, they just got hot at the right time. I'm not taking anything away from the Oil's playoff run last year, I just don't think it was Lowe's doing.

I'm not sure I blame him for the trade--Smyth could have taken a $300,000 pay cut and stayed in Edmonton. 5.7 million to 5.4 million. The Oil probably needs that money for something, but not Smyth. What's he going to do with that money anyways? I'm sure he's sitting in New York right now, feeling sorry that he didn't accept a 5.4 million dollar contract. I'm hoping he comes to his senses and makes sure he signs with Edmonton for 2007-08.

Okay, I do think Lowe should have been able to avoid the trade. He is Captain Canada.

I think hes fired forsure, unless he can re-sign Smyth in the off season which is seeming highly unlikely, after letting pronger get away for nothing but lupul whos done nothing this year and a draft pick that was a waste. and Don't forget Peca who played a key role during that playoff run as well. Unless Lowe can Acquire a Big name player during the off season to compliment smyths "possible" return or help out Hemsky on the top line, I believe Lowes as good as gone, they Should Pursue McCabe from Toronto to salvage the D but then they're lackn offence upfront

I think kevin lowe did this deal to get draft picks and he will get him back as a free agent, because 300,000 isnt that big of difference and if ryans Boo hoo performance means he loves edmonton that much he will be back
