I definitely agree - our troops deserve our unwavering support and respect. They do not choose the battles, but they fight them on our behalf and for this we owe them a debt of gratitude. Oppose the war, yes, but do not oppose our troops.
Your Grandfather is a very wise man!

Yes those troops that are there in the field of conflict have no choice in the matter they are there because the idiots WE elected chose to send them there (for their own purposes).
So even though I think this war was concocted on an evil tissue of lies and deceptions, in order that the politicians could be "Seen to be doing something", I fully back the troops on the ground (unless they do wrong like at Abu-Graib).
I say this as a Brit who lost two good friends at the WTC on 9/11 and has friends out in Iraq now.
THE WAR IS AND ALWAYS WAS WRONG;

He's been watching too much Fox News on Sky.
If you disagree with a war you don't support the troops.
Personally I think anyone naive enough to join the army deserves to risk getting shot-it will improve the gene pool a bit by removing the stupid ones.
I would never risk my life fighting for Tony Bliar, any other government,or this crap country.

Absolutely agree.
I'm a Veteran like your Grandpa. I don't agree with the conflict even though I do understand the reasoning behind it.
My Son is a Veteran too and I continually worried while he was in the Middle East.

Yes, I do agree with that statement. Your grandfather is a wise man.
Our soldiers go where ordered to. I was a soldier for 20 years, and I went and did my job, even when I thought our government was wrong. I voiced my ojbection to the war, but still went because those men and women going with me knew that in the end, we stand for each other, not for the silly mistakes or the stupidity of our political leaders.
I was injured, severely, but I recovered and returned to service. When I was in command, I never allowed anyone to remain behind, and it doesn't matter race, creed or political views, we support each other because we are ONE, and we expect America to receive us with open arms upon returning home, and remember and respect the heroes that gave their lives, and the veterans who gave their health on behalf of our great Nation.

Yes, I totally agree with your grandfather. It is the government not the troops who are responsible for deciding these things. It seems that some of the people giving you answers here can't understand the difference.

Firstly I want to say I very strongly oppose our involvement in this war and have passionate feelings against all that has resulted from it. However, my heart goes out to those who's children, husbands, brothers, sisters, wives that are out there and pray for they're safety. I am constantly angry at hearing of casualties as a result of it. And lay the blood at the hands of those two tyrants, that have called them to represent. So I suppose I understand what grandfather is saying. The powers that be have us by the short and curlies... What can we do? Stay blessed!!

i agree with the sentiment and the statement - it is well documented that the army is made up largely of the lowest economic strata of any society (hence the term canon fodder). Very few political decision makers have thier own sons/daughters serving in the armed forces.

I totally agree with that statement, especially because my husband has been in Iraq for 11 months. Your grandfather sounds like a very smart man, and please thank him for his service to our country.

Your grandfather thinks that no matter what your real opinion is of something, you should publically agree with it???
What if you told him, "Whether or not you agree with gay marriage, you should unhesitantly and with all of your heart support those gays who are getting married"?
Would he have a heart attack?
Part of this being a free world is the freedom to voice your real opinion. If you should support whatever the State does no matter what you think of it, then you may as well be in a dictatorship.
