Gas consumption is not affected by turning on the heater only, unless you use an AC mode. Then the gas consumption will be affected as the AC compressor will be engaging and therefore require the motor's effort to spin the comp. Use non-AC modes to alleviate this, heater and vent. Good luck.

The heater runs off of the cooling system. This will not use more gas but, if you run the heater on defrost or by-level the air condoning compressor is now running to help take the moisture out of the air. Try to run it on floor heat as much as possible if gas is an issue. To answer your question, there is nothing wrong with your car.

'big d' is right when he says the A.C. runs when your heat is turned to 'defrost'. The ac will reduce fuel mileage when engaged but the sacrifice is worth it if it is the only way to keep your windshield clear. One accident, because of poor vissibillity, can whipe out many years of frugal penny pinching. Yes- it's like a hidden cost to your insurance premium but-an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Insurance companies sometimes reduce thier premiums when your vehicle has auto daytime lights and rear window defrost along with many other proven incidence reducers built into your car.
