core duo > 32 bit processors
t2x00 / t2x50 - 533 or 667 mhz fsb, 2 mb l2 cache

core 2 duo > 64 bit processors
t5x00 - 533 or 667 mhz fsb, 2 mb l2 cache
t7x00 - 667 mhz fsb, 4 mb l2 cache

i've posted processor numbers for laptops as u mentioned it !

the faster the clock speed the better
the higher the fsb the faster
the bigger the l2 cache the better

the intel core 2 duo t7200 is my personal favorite
2.0 ghz, 667 mhz fsb, 4 mb l2 cache
priced just right & great on performance

the t7400 & t7600 are faster, but way too steeply priced !

I just got a laptop on Wednesday March 15 and I 100 percent recomend the Core 2 Duo. The difference is that the Core 2 is newer and as an average of %40 longer batterie life. Also, I recomend 2 GB of memory for vista which will go along with the Core 2 Duo chip. At first I looked at a couple laptops with a Core Duo and It ran very slow and the battery life was about 1:30 hours. Now with my new one it's about 2:45 but it's only the battery and the laptop itself. Now, you can by laptops with 3 to 4 hour battery life. I highly recomend my laptop also it is an HP DV 6275 or any of the DV 6000 series. Also Dells run very well. (The link of my laptop for Circuit City (where I got it) is not the correct picture and you can only order online there's no store pick up. Use the HP link for picture.)

The Core Duo is a 32-bit processor and has 2MB of L2 cache (1MB per core). The Core 2 Duo is a 64-bit processor and has 4MB of L2 cache (2MB per core) and comes in higher clock speeds and is also more efficient. In benchmarks the Core 2 Duo is 10% to 15% faster than its predecessor and operates cooler.
