You may 'Hate Me For This', but here goes..
Delete the Problem and 'Start Over Fresh'
WARNING This is a " LAST STEP MEASURE " !!!
Have you or any of your friends familiar with this ?
DELPART.EXE It Deletes Partitions, or Whole Drive History. After using this program you must "Fdisk and reformat".
Using a 'Good Computer', go on line and 'Look at this site,
http://bb.1asphost.com/eurekal/other2_delpart.htm
If you think it can help, Download it program ti a "A" drive 1.44 floppy. This program works with your "A" drive 'Start Disk, Life you stated, you ran Fdisk. When you get to 'A:/, Change to the disk you downloaded, Type 'A:/w' ( spaced out to read easier > A : / W < ) The File should read " DELPART.EXE", Type it in and press "Enter" and follow the instructions . After you complete this, Change disk back to your 'Start Disk' and proceed with 'Fdisk.exe' and your "Formatting'.
After you 'Finally' get Reformatted, and every thing is running,
Down load HDD Health from this site,
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hddhealth.html
it is a good HDD Utility. but your computer must be running to use it.
I hope this helps you.

If you're running windows xp you can separate the software by running system recovery and formatting whats left of the hard drive.
(1) Start
(2) All Programs
(3) System Recovery
(4) System Recovery
It then gives you various options what you want to do and you want to format the disk..
System Recovery with disk format.
If its possible, try doing a defrag on your disk first to see if it will move it to the beginning or end of the disk, because then it wont pick the error up at 12% and stop it from going any further.

Slave the drive by using a 2.5" inch drive enclosure to another PC to get your data off. Toddle down to PC world or cheapy PC man around the corner, by a new disk and once you have put an OS back on, copy your data off using the drive enclousre again.
Your disk has bad sectors on it, (which means it will never be able to read that part of the disk again) but you may still be able to get your data off.
Good luck!

You can do it with a windows xp cd. Just pop the cd in. Restart your computer, and when you get to the screen that asks if you want to do a fresh install i.e. format your hard drive... go with that option.

Sounds like you could use a new hard drive. Is that laptop new or old. They are not too hard to replace in the newer ones. Hope this helps
