If you mean granting a continuance, there could be many reasons for a continuance. Sometimes the courts are too busy with other trials or a key witness might be out of town. I've seen continuances granted for all kinds of reasons, including one time when the opposing lawyer in my case said he was sick and requested a continuance the day of the trail. The court granted his request.
