It stands for 'little', but apparently bow wow has taken the 'lil' of his name now cause hes not so little anymore.

ists just a short abbreviated way to put "litttle: like lil wayne "little wayne" "lil" is a bit more updated.. Saying little wayne is a little too proper and corny sounding.
