The only thing I can come up with is that now that the terrorist have got the liberals back in office they want them to do something about that darn pesky patriots act that keeps tripping them up.

I think its pre-emptive, frankly. The story is bound to get out, so better they report it themselves. This way, it will look to the public as though the government is really trying to do something to protect the citizens of the United States. The Patriot Act has come under such fire that they can't afford this kind of corruption.

But once again, a government body has been entrusted with developing and following a process...something that government is clearly not capable of doing. When are they going to realize that business is best left to business professionals...and any kind of process must be outsourced to an organization or entrusted to a proven individual to develop and manage? I clearly understand the sensitive nature of the information, but businesses deal with personal and confidential information all the time...with much more success and security than any government agency can provide...

The government can only stop a story from going to press, the government is not the newspaper itself.

The FBI is always in trouble and in the movies stories never like them.

It suppose to be that way to maintain their omniscient reputation that may or may not exist.

The victims will never receive compensation other than to read these articles you have referred to.

Most readers won't even know they were victims in the first place.

I default to the inflation of FBI's ego, and that the article you refer to has achieved its omni potent reputation yet again, whether FBI is in fact omni potent remains to be seen.

Its all psychology and scare tactics...

Winners is a case in point:

My bet, the RCMP had more dignity and credibility to find the truth than did the FBI in that instance.

As I have heard in the papers Canada is still waiting for an apology regarding honorable Zacharelli ?

The report was live on C-Span before committee hearings. The Patriot Act, along with providing powers in excess of what our Constitution allows, requires over-sight and reports to be filed on a regular basis. Its part of our government working the way it should. Checks and balances. Naturally, our free press will report it. That's what they're supposed to do.

im not sure.. i am just glad that someone finally just came out and took the blame for what happened.. that certainly hasnt happened for awhile

and im not sure there is an angle.. but i could see the administration leaking it in order to gain credibility, something they certainly do not have enough of.. or they may have feared that it would get out anyways, so they may as well put it out there themselves so that they can set the tone of the discussion that follows

im just glad someone took responsibility for it

The Patriot Act has come under fire as unconsitutional. One of the attacks on it is that it is not being used to thwart terrorist, but is being used against US citizens/businesses that have nothing to do with terrorism. The FBI is basically combating this by saying it is not the Patriot Act that is bad, it is a few of our agents (scapegoats) who misused it. I feel sorry for the agents who take the hit on this one.

Perhaps, we could add a word to our lexicon from situations like this...
These agents have been "scootered." (In reference to the fact that they, like Scooter Libby, have been made scapegoats by the Bush administrations drive to get what they want at all costs...even doing things illegally)

What story ? Those stories are not being told in the newspapers I read or the TV reports. Or if they are being told they are not being told in a responsible and rational fashion. And what about editorial comment ? The silence is deafening.
