for some reason my laptop has detected a wireless connection from my home and now i am online.
how is this happening, and will i get fined?

don't know if it matter but i live in australia.

p.s : is this a safe connection? or am i susceptible to hackers leaking of my passwords?

One of your neighbours has got an open wifi router... and you've connected onto it.

In the UK such an action (on your part) is technically illegal... not sure how the law in Australia stands on this... because you are stealing use of his kit.

BUT if he's such a dipstick as to have left it open and unlocked, is he going to notice you are using it?

You got a free connection just download some 80 gb after making sure that the connection is not from your own home and you'll hear people screaming after a month.It is better to use firewall and some other anti-virus protection.

maybe ur neighbour has a wireless modem that is not protected.
so your card just connects to it.
automatically.
