Not only is it safe...it is highly reccommended!
As you use your computer...files get thrown around and moved on the hard drive...after a while it takes your hard drive alot longer to search and access the files on the drive since it takes it longer to find them...defrag moves and arranges your files for faster access. It is also a good idea to defrag before and after you install or uninstall a program. If you use your computer alot...then defrag regularly..if your puter is on all day and you use it often than defrag every other day or so...you can also buy the full version of the defrag program Microsoft uses for Windows...Executive Software's "Diskeeper" and you then have more options like set it and forget it...it schedules regular defrags of your hard drives while you work......

Defragging is safe however, you should use it somewhat sparingly. Although it is good for you (you're computer will run somewhat better), it is not good for your hard disk. Running defrag frequently will reduce the life of your hard disk. I would suggest doing it no more than once every six months or so.

You should definitely defrag. I try to do it once a week at least. It makes the computer faster. The longer you wait to do it the longer it will take for it to defrag.

Yes it is...You should defrag your computer every 2-3 days - that's essential and important!!!! When you never defragment your computer, it's getting VERY slow with the time being...

You also should download the free CCleaner as well - the CCleaner erases all temporary Internet files, cookies, etc. and also errors in the registry.

Greetings from Germany...

I think it's a good idea to set your maintenance wizard to run at a time when you're going to be away from your computer for a while, like during the night. Set the wizard to do a defrag, scandisk, clean-up. It's a good time to run your anti-virus too, immediately before or after scheduled tasks.

And do a back-up while you're at it!

only needed if your PC starts tacking long time to load a program
and if you don't put unwanted or unused stuff on the drive there will be no need to clean it
if the trash is empty why take it out
now a days a fast as processors and memory are defrag is not a huge gain in performance unless your a clutter junkie

It is safe. You don't really need to defrag very often if you use windows XP or newer. More important to clean your registry and delete temp files and spyware.

Yes, I would De frag once a month, It places all of your files where they need to be so the computer can find these files.Making your computer run much faster.
