A hiatus is a break, a lapse, an interruption in a particular event or sequence of events.
For example, I'm going to take a hiatus from Yahoo! Answers now or else I'll never get any of my regular work done today!

Hiatus hernia
[hiyaytus] A protrusion of the upper part of the stomach into the chest through the hole in the diaphragm that allows the oesophagus to pass into the abdomen. It is a common condition, and most individuals affected are untroubled. However, it predisposes to a reflux of acid from the stomach into the oesophagus, which lacks a protective lining and becomes inflamed. The result is heartburn, felt as a burning pain in the lower chest.
