Which type of cpu you recommand? AM2 or core duo

Well, it really depends on your needs.

If you just need absolute performance, then the Intel Core 2 Duo processors (Core Duos, without the "2" are only for laptops, and are old as well, don't buy them.) is the best choice. As those processors have nearly an advantage compared to an Athlon64 X2 in every way.

But if your primary focus is games, then I do not suggest a dual core processor at all. It is because most (More than 95%) games do not use/support dual processing, which means it kinda wastes the second core/processor.

The fastest single core processor right now is the Athlon-FX series. FX-57 is the fastest single core, anything beyond the FX-57 (FX-70, FX-74) are also dual core processors.
