you must comply with it because it is a legal requirement of any business. it protects your employees, customers and in all fairness you the employer.
it relates to anyone who handles other peoples personal information as they must keep it safe and confidential.

If you work for someone and you have details of customers eg address details or bank details, if you give them to anyone other than something do do with your work you can be sued. You have to legally protect the data from being misused.
