The bleach suggested will work. But if you would like to avoid chemicals, place them out in the full sun all day. The UV will work on the embedded organic material that was left behind, andthen just a light re-wash when you bring them back in.

You should never place plastic in the microwave, the chemicals leech onto/into your food. Plastic is toxic. However, the baking soda, about 11/2 tsp, with 1/4 c of lemon juice should do the trick. Use microwaveable safe glass.

they sell a new plastic cleaner for your dishwasher, give that a try. i would be leery of bleach, i wouldn't want all of my food to end up smelling like bleach. if not throw it out and replace with rubbermaid stain shield. it is a clear plastic that does not absorb odors or stains.

Fill it with hot water. Squirt in some dish soap and add some baking soda. Stir it all up and let it set for 1 week. That should do it.

I read that if you wad up a piece of newspaper and seal it inside the container for a day. It removes all the smell.

Soak in vinegar or lemon juice.
If it's a type of plastic that can go in the microwave, mix vinegar and water and boil it in the microwave.
