I have recently bought an external 20gh drive IBM DJA 220. It plugs in fine and starts working, but its prone to suddenly disconnecting and this is becoming a real pain when transferring data. When i take out the usb lead and plug it in then its fine! I use it for my bit torrent downloading so its becoming really annoying. I have tried going into control panel and 'populating' it, which it does fine until the next disconnection. I have tried putting it in different usb port too and that hasn't done anything, any suggestions?? there is no conflict showing in device manager and it comes up as my f drive. Using win xp sp1, could it be my usb ports as they are not 2.0???

Whether it's usb 2 or 1 won't make any difference to the connection (Apart from the speed!)

i had a simlar problem once and it was to do with the power adaptor for the hdd!

if your external hd is powered seperately, then it could lose power occasionaly which would explain why it keeps disconnecting!!

you could try sp2 as this includes drivers pack which is the only other thing that could cause the problem!!

this seems to be a power issue. Ok first does your ext. drive have a seperate ac plug or are you using just the USB to transfer data and power it up. Sometimes the USB ports (specially 1.1) don't have the necessary power through the ports to operate it correctly, that is why during transfers it disconnects or in other words loses power.

Is it actually coming out of the port physically or just reporting that it is disconnected? If its the latter of the 2 it sounds like lack of power. Some of those USB connected HD's have a double sort of triple conection cord. 2 on your computer side and one on the HD. That or a power supply. If it's falling out physically. . .duct tape.

Hi,
You have found the answer yourself, these devises should be driven by USB 2.2 Ports (it say's you can but you can't), so you will have to install a PCI USB 2.2 card and drive it from that
