this may sound really stupid but i have been pricing ryokan and i was going to book one without a bath does this mean that there will still be washing facilities such as a shower?

No, there will not be a shower in your room as it only comes with a toilet. You will be expected to bathe in the communal baths within the ryokan. Some ryokans allow you to reserve their smaller "family baths" for about an hour though, so you may want to check with them before booking.
There aren't many ryokans with showers and the hot baths are really part of the Japanese ryokan experience!

There should be something. I'd double-check if I were you. It might be a language thing. They might be saying that your room won't have its own bath. This is common in ryoken, especially older ones. There is a community bath at the ryoken. Actually it's normally two, one for men and one for women.
If this is the case you ought to read up on how to take a Japanese-style bath. I included one link below.
