I have several books along those lines....
God's Callgirl being one by Carla Van Ray
Porky - Deborah Mogash (not sure if surname is correct)
Souad by Souad
The is another called Emma and Me (im not sure of the Author)
And another called Sickened by Julie Gregory

These are all really great stories, they are stories of survival, of persistence, of recovery, and of fear and loathing , but are worth it when you see how much these people have triumphed over the adversities they have faced. The books are written mostly by the people that experienced the issues faced in the stories, i hope you enjoy them as much as i did.

Try books by Jodi Picoult. Her books are thought provoking. They deal with realistic people and emotions in extraordinary circumstances.
One of my favorite books by her is My Sister's Keeper.

read something of Charles Dickens maybe. He's not modern, but he's an interesting writer.
