Thinking about how much worse others have it in life has brought me through some rough times, but I do not feel better about myself for it.
When I was 19 my back problems started and eventually I got to the point where I could barely move. I felt so sorry for myself and wallowed in my own little pity pot for a while. But then I snapped out of it by thinking about how grateful I should be because I didn't have it as bad as others.

No, because life is for living, not suffering through. If I can help just one person a day get by, I feel my life is well lived.

good question, No I don't. I feel just as lousy about myself whether or not others' are miserable. It does make me feel better when others' do well 'cause at least I know someone whose not an idiot.

In some occasions... but in spite of myself!!! I'm trying to change that. I just can't help a little evil grin once in a while, especially when we talk about people I'm not exactly crazy about...
