In all three Lord of the Rings movies there are Dramatic Monolgues. Like when Gandolf (sp) is back and is telling aragorn of his fight with the demon. At the beggining of The Fellowship the when the Lady is speaking of the past it is very dramatic. (sorry kinda vague I haven't watched it in a while) That series would be good to use because most kids would have seen it. I would also say you could use The monologue morgan freeman does at the beggining of War of the Worlds but some parents might not have let there kids see that one. Hope this is helpful

With no real offense to you, even some comedies have moments of drama in the script somewhere, and certainly with the number of movies that have come out in the last 9 plus years, 9th graders must be familiar with some.

Also with no offense are you a teacher of drama? Theater? or a member of a peer group in a 9th grade class?

The job should involve no more than research, in the form of picking up various DVD's and excerpting moments of drama from them, and it may even offer you a way to show comparisons.

Then too there are thousands of books make into plays and screen plays that will provide the same, as well as drama related scripts, for film and theater. In a most general sense LIFE is drama, and depending on how you define it, you should be able to find it and its examples, everywhere.

As a "teacher" I suggest you offer some Shakespere as another method to exhibit evolution of theater and how drama was expressed as compared to how it is now. Believe me it will primarily be in the way it was spoken.

Why would you just assume they don't know any classic monologues, or be so dismissive of them? Use the monologues from modern flims, like "On the Waterfront" or "The Lord of the RIngs" to SHOW your kids the great playwrights and the similarities, and talk about how those authors were inspired by the ones who came before, how Tolkien was inspired by Shakespeare, and Shakespeare was inspired by playwrights before him.

Don't assume your kids are dumb! Raise the bar! Don't just teach movies!
