The House and Senate have the responsibility of oversight. Perhaps they should have to go there as well.

The problem with that scenario is that Bush and Cheney would receive special attention and would use the occasions as photo ops to declare that the care at Walter Reed was now ideal. The underlying issue is that the Bush administration never planned for the consequences of its misconceived war in Iraq. During the nearly four years after the invasion, it was inconvenient to address the extremely expensive issue of the care of wounded soldiers so the Bush administration ignored it. The Bush administration has consistently tried to minimize the war costs, protect its tax cuts and avoid discussion of the long-term costs. It took the determined efforts of Washington Post reporters to bring this issue to the public’s attention and now of course the Bush administration appears shocked to discover the problem that it created and ignored. Now Bush appoints a commission, fires officials and acts as if he could not have known anything about this before. Nothing about the Iraq War has been open and honest from before its inception to the present day but the neglect of the after-care treatment of the wounded has been especially shameful and disgusting.

The conditions at Walter Reed go at the heart of the issue of the war in Iraq. The plan of Bush and Cheney to invade Iraq is more then just sending men to fight in war. There is planning and how to conduct a war. Bush and Cheney were such as "experts" on war. There problems deal with wounded back in the states.

Remember the control of Congress and the White House was in the hands of the Republicans and Bush and Cheney were given free hand in thw war no questions asked. Now there is accountability in Congress.

Just like mess they had with hurricane Katrina Bush and Cheney must be held accoutable.

If people like Chuckie Schumer would actually have VISITED the troops once in a while, he might have known about this earlier, rather than being "shocked" at reading about it in the Washington Compost.

People like Schumer go to these hospitals every couple of years for a photo op at election time, but that's about it.

Where are the families of the soldiers on this? They MUST have complained to their Representatives or Senators about it, if it was as bad as it's being made out to be.... why is the House and Senate only responding to this NOW, if it's been going on for years? I haven't heard a PEEP from Schumer, Murtha, Pelosi, Kerry... where have these people been?

Walter Reed Hospital was already in bad shape BEFORE Bush was elected, the first time. Should Clinton have gotten his by-pass surgery done there? He probably wouldn't have lived long enough to eat his next fat, juicy Big Mac, and fries. Blame the hospital, their administation, and their doctors, and nurses. They are the ones responsible.

The care was not ever questioned. It was the after care that was the problem. And I for one think it is time we citizens get together and force the government to do right by our veterans.

Would you be interested in forming a group to circulate a national petition to send to congress?

All Congress as well. Teddy Kennedy has been in office since 1963, I think he has a little more shame to bear.
