You'll have what is called a transvaginal scan.

It isn't painful but it's not exactly the most comfortable thing in the world. It's a bit like having a pap smear.

Most women are familiar with the normal external transabdominal ultrasound scan where the transducer is pressed against the skin. With a transvaginal scan the transducer is shaped like a probe, about the size and shape of a thick ballpoint pen, which is covered with a protective sheath, lubricated, and then inserted very gently into the vagina. During the exam, the technician may place a hand on the lower abdomen to move the inetrnal strucures around and make them easier to see.

Unfortunately you won't get a to see a whole lot of your baby at 33 weeks with a transvaginal scan. First trimester transvaginal scanning gives a good view of the baby, but by 33 weeks the baby will be too big.

If you're lucky, the tech might get out the transabdominal transducer and give the baby a quick once over!

Best of luck.

I had one done very early in pregnancy because of spotting. It didn't hurt at all & the scan looked the same as the regular one that I had done later that day.

It is not painful and gives very good pictures of the womb, its contents, and ovaries.

There may be mild discomfort from the pressure of the vaginal probe.
