I'm a correctional educator and my students are expected to prepare a resume; just to be somewhat related to it before they go into society. Their major concern is, how to find a refference in their community that is willing to eco their skills and personality if they really do not know anybody but the people that got them in trouble to begin with? Could you please help me with some ideas for them? Serious answers only! PLEASE.

The people that relate to them daily in the correctional institution would be the best to relate their progress from troubled person through the person they have become to reassimilate into society.

Even a lesson to write themselves on how they feel they have changed and the person they've become.....how they will try to conform and what they would like the outside employer to know about themselves and how to grow trust in their abilities and the person that they are now as they "turn the corner" in their past troubled lives. Let them put down thoughts and then compose a "was that"..."now I'm this" list
to organize their thoughts and feelings.....it might just work wonders for their self esteem and let them reflect on their past and where it diod not get them...good start!

Good luck!!!

if they have never been employed before or have burnt the bridges of past employers it's going to be hard. initially they will have to rely on personal references. find someone outside of mom/dad and troubled friends to vouch for them. it is extremely important to begin with a good, stable work history and then the rest will come. stick with a job for a little while and prove yourself to that employer and they will help in the future. it always begins with taking the first right step.

Try the clergy and/or counselors such as yourself. Perhaps they can find former teachers, coaches, Boy Scout leaders, or Boys Clubs workers who can put a good word in. How about someone who participated in a Big Brother program?

(No sexism implied. Girl Scouts, Big Sister, etc.)

It's someone who trusts you. Possibly someone they babysit for or someone that they do community service for (lawn mowing...weedwacking..etc.) A best friend's mom who knows you very well.
Most of these ^ people would make good references for a resume.
Good Luck!

Well, better choose someone who will give positive response on behalf of the person.
