They may not need oxygen, or at least not the same concentration of oxygen we have in our atmosphere, but water is pretty essential to basic amino acid formation, and amino acids form "life" as we know it. That does not, however, preclude the possibility of life existing in waterless environments. It would just be another type of life than what we're accustomed to. There is a possibility that there's life on Titan, where there are methane rain storms and frozen seas.

Well, it's not just humans.
All of the 'animals' on our planet need water and oxygen, so from what we know these are the fundamental necessities for 'life as we know it'.
The plants need CO2, water and sunlight, but would this be considered life?

The kind of chemical bonding needed to create nucleotides can only happen in the presence of water.
When oxygen is burned with sugar it produces energy. Organisms can live without oxygen, but not highly energetic species such as multi-cellular animals (fish, amphibians, mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, arachnids, etc.). Animals that move around have high energetic needs. Only with oxygen (and sugar) can we produce such energy requirements.
