Ive tried running MSCONFIG but then when my computer restarts it warns me to restore programs and set them back to how they were ( cant remember exact text!)

Firstly, you need to use the free program called CCleaner which got rid of 2gb's worth of nothing of my computer. Then download IObit smart defrag and use that. And then get Ashampoo WinOptimizer and clean up using that.

All programs are free and effective.

PS. Try downloading and runnin Spyware Terminator aswell, that can get rid of spyware/adaware

Generally a slow statup will be caused by too many programs trying to load when Windows starts. Select START and then RUN, type MSCONFIG and select OK.

The startup tab will display all the programs that will execute when windows boots. I'd recommend removing everything except vital systems software such as Anti Virus software. This should improve boot times considerably.

I wouldn't recommend downloading further software as this usually only adds to the problem.

Making more free space on your computer won't necessarily make your computer any faster just less junk in the way of what it needs to do. MORE RAM. If your maxed out then you need to upgrade and the only way I know how to do that for free is if you have free time. There is a place you can go to down near 880 in Berkeley that has tons of computer stuff but you gotta find it first and then you gotta do some work for it. Other than that you can just drive around through neighborhoods and your bound to find a free computer sitting out on the streets that you can use to upgrade yours or visa versa. Or you can steal one. Or rob a bank or 7-11 . I wouldn't recomend the last 2 options unless you like hanging out with lots of the same sex in orange or blue clothes eating crapy food and . . . .oh you get the picture. Jail !?! If that's your thing then go to it.

The best way to speed up at startup if you have tried every thing else is to go to run, type MSCONFIG click the startup tab & uncheck anything you don,t absolutely have to have running at startup. This will cause the programs to stop booting up with your computer but you will still be able to start them manually if you want to use them later.Hope this helps.

Hmm..if you are using Windows XP you can clean up the System Restore's restoration data. To do this, press Start, Run, type cleanmgr. Click on More Options tab, and press the button 'Clean Up' on System Restore. Note that after you delete the restoration data you may not able to recover your computer to the previous state.

Two essential programs are Ccleaner and Winpatrol. They can be used to safely cut doen the programs loading on startup, which will free up some RAM for when you need it. Plus they use plain English and icons!
http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.ccleaner.com
Use the Issues tool, then the Cleaner to clear out uneeded files and speed things up.

Check www.download.com for some free software that might help. Also if there are programs you don't use you could uninstall them to free up some space. Good luck =)

You could also try adding additional ram memory to your computer.
