The first thing you may want to do is to ask yourself just how you want to go faster. I've spent along time instructing at Porsche Club track events, and the answer to "how do I go faster" almost never winds up being "more power" or "bigger engine." But first, just to your question.
An engine from a 924S, 931, 944, or 951 would probably be at least somewhat straightforward as a swap into an early 924. There are also SBC conversion kits around. And unlike 911 (where the SBC's center of gravity sits much higher than the flat 6), this retains a somewhat similar balance in the car. But the problem you will face with any of these is 1) adding alot more power to the chasis will mean you need to upgrade the suspension, brakes, etc, to keep a good performance balance, 2) the cost of the engine alone is likely to exceed the value of the car by a long shot, and it will not really increase the car's value; you have to be willing to spend quite a lot and not get any measure of the money back if you sell the car.
If you really want something with more power, you will find it much more economical and ultimately alot more succesful in the results to simply sell the 924 as is and get a different car.
Now, back to the first part... if your goal is just to be faster, the 924 is a good car to learn with since it's lack of power will force you as a driver to learn to maintain momemtum. I beleive the 924 used CIS injection (the 924S might've been DME)... there are some references on tuning CIS, and in conjuntion with a more open exhaust you might free up a little bit of power at the expense of needing to use premium gas. Though in terms of actual speed, you'll get more bang for you dollar at looking at performance tires. Will affect every aspect of the car's performance.
After that, maybe some ARBs from a 951? Can often be found having been taken off for after market upgrades and would provide better exit speed from corners. And, of course, if you want a better power to weight ration, you can probably achieve more by getting rid of weight than going the route of increasing power.

I like the 924 S
If I had a 924 I would find a 931 Turbo or a 932 the heads and cam change would be the best performance changes but are not cheap.
Best over all thing would be to Fix the 924 Up and sell it. And Buy a 944 Turbo.... Or 928S or S4
Or you can do like my friend did and swap in a LS2 and a 6spd. He runs 10.25 all day at the track with no up grades on the engine yet... He got his from Rolled over cop car.
Great Idea's just need the pocket to go with them....

the 924s were not all that fast. There was a 924 Carrera GT, which was a bit of a beast, but those are rare and hard to find.
If you want a fast 4 cyl porsche, get a 944 turbo (aka the 951). Theyre easy to mod, and fast.
but be warned. They may be cheap to buy, but no porsche will be cheap to maintain.
and doing a motor swap into a porsche generally isnt the best of ideas. Its usually very expensive and will generally ruin the handling.

Sadly the 924 is something of the "Forgotten Porsche" so parts and support are a bit harder to come across. It was an Audi/Porsche project that really didn't do very well.
You may find some of what you're looking for on www.autoatlanta.com

I took a 924 with a bad engine, spent $1000 on a wrecked 944, swapped the engine, and now have a car that can out run most 944's, and out corner a 911 in it's sleep (like most front engine Porsche's). People who rip on the 924 are those who can't afford a 911 Turbo, and still don't get that a well balanced car can take a 911 on the track most days. The '78 is basically an Audi though, so you'll need to upgrade most of the suspension to 944 gear (or 924 S, same thing).
