Both are important, but appearance is likely more important. The 2000 election is an example. It may have been a fair and honest election, but it sure didn't appear that way. That election was the beginning of a rift in the nation that has just gotten wider in time.

Interesting!

I suppose we should hope that if the elections ARE fair and honest, word will get out.

In no way should the appearance be more important than the fact.

If the people don't believe the truth, it will indeed be bad for society. But that would be the least of our problems if the public were so mistrustful and/or misinformed.

I don't want to live in a country where elections are NOT fair and honest, and the people are content with that. Or the opposite.

That would be answer A

Appearances are often quite deceiving. I voted for Al Gore in 2000. I was disappointed he lost the election, & embarassed by some of the post election garbage & wrangling from all sides which gave the appearance the 2000 Presidential election was not indeed fair & honest.

I have no lingering doubts about it however. The man I supported lost , I moved on & started working for candidates I shared beliefs w who were beginning their campaigns for 2002.

I never once felt the election was anything but fair & honest, tho appearances were clearly at odds w that conclusion

Both fair and honest elections must appear fair and honest elections to the public. This is why, the National-Union believes that popular votes should choose the winner of the election and in a tie electoral votes, http://www.voteprimous.com

(B) is more important to the stability of elections but the appearance of democracy is not an acceptable substitute for democracy to me.
