Basically, I know I can get along with most age groups. I don't think I want to teach at college level yet, but I know I can narrow it down somewhere between 4th and 12th graders. I'll be working on my masters in education by next year, and hope to finish it within two years. so I think I need some idea as which age group I should focus on by the time I begin my journey...

First you need to have student teaching experience behind you to make this decision. Most student teaching involves an 8-16 week participation at two levels: primary and secondary. As for which grade - don't limit yourself so soon. You may start out in middle school and decide that elementary is more for you. It isn't the subject or the age level that you teach - the questions is, can you handle your class with good class management? Without good discipline management you might as well not even be there. Principals look for good classroom managers. If you want to do high school, you will be more specialized in your field. But you will still have to manage your class and be able to keep them on task. Good luck!

It's great that you are looking into this before starting your teaching career. Too many people just jump right into it without thinking and end up disliking the age group they are working with. It would be great if you could spend time in different classrooms at different grade levels. That would give you an idea what the curriculum is like and what the students at each grade level are like. Schools usually have no problem having future educators come in to observe, so just contact a local school and you'll be on your way. Good Luck!

One difference you need to consider is that at the high school level you will teach a single subject whereas at the elementary level you will teach multiple subjects. Personally I have gotten a very good taste of it all by working as a substitute instructional aide. Since you say you have narrowed it down to between 4th and 12th graders you obviously like the older kids. You just need to consider single subject or multiple subject and if you are considering junior high school level they have additional problems because they are in the inbetween stage and hormones are rampant. Also, consider if you want to have the same kids all day or get a new batch for each period.

Better choose the 10th or 11th graders. For sure, they are well behaved ones.
Good luck and may your dream to become a Master holder come true. GOD BLESS US ALL.
