Once the oil starts to run out you will see a definite shift back to the old tried and true ways.

People will move back to the cities where everything is closer in proximity and where you can take advantage of other energy efficiencies (mass transit, multiple family dwellings, etc.). This will help put an end to suburban sprawl.

People will also grow more of their own food, or at least buy more locally grown foods. Foreign imports will be too expensive for most consumers and the giant agriculture companies won't be able to compete with local farms if their transportation and fertilizer costs skyrocket.

And finally, people will have to "gather" more of their own energy through passive solar and photoelectric means. You'll see more windmills and bicycles too.

Maybe the world's population will level off and gradually recede to sustainable levels. In the long run, the end of oil might be a pretty good thing.

Strangely enough, that is not such a crazy idea.

Social scientists did a study of a few of the last hunter-gatherer societies on Earth and found that on average, they spend 2-4 hours a day taking care of their basic needs. They sleep 8-10 hours, and then play or create with the remaining 10-14 hours.

Americans work 10-12 hours on average (higher for high status, high pay jobs) and we create and play much less. Maybe, all this material wealth is not so good after all.

Just a thought,
Hope you get some good responses
