I own a Mitsubishi HD1000 projector. Cost me around 900 and I have it set up in my bedroom. I have it displaying a 68" projected image. Its has a native resolution of 1280 x 720 so it can handle 720p HD resolution without any compression. Contrast nor picture quality is not a drawback for projectors. Picture quality depends on what you have it plugged into. Watching HD channels on it looks so amazing. Now watching regular TV channels do look horrible, but all regular tv channels look horrible on anything above 42". Now contrast quality depends on how much control you have over your lighting. I have one window which I covered with blackout curtains so it makes my room completely dark. Also you can buy gray-scale projector screens which can help out with the contrast if you can't get a completely darkened room. I own a Dell Inspiron E1705 which has both a VGA and a DVI output. When I first connected my laptop to the projector I was using the VGA connection and I wasn't too happy. I was only able to achieve a 4:3 aspect ratio. So I bought a DVI to HDMI cable (The projector only has a HDMI input and not a DVI input) I was able to get a 16:9 aspect ratio. Surfing the Web and playing Half-Life 2 look great. The reasons why I bought..and love....this projector was the price, native resolution, and connectivity. If you decide to buy a projector do your research. Hope this help. I've included a couple of links that can help out your decision.

Like the other poster has said, the most common projectors have very poor image quality, which will affect your work. But to answer your question, yes you can use projectors as an alternative to a monitor.

There are projectors with good images, but they are really expensive.

why?
It has very poor contrast and life of the bulb is low - but gives you good size advantage and mobility
Resolution also may not be great.. as compared to a high resolution LCD TV
