Wow, cool question. I hope you get some good answers.

I've never been in an official cult, but my family were in Amway while I was growing up and that was pretty cultish. I went to some conventions and adults were jumping on chairs and cheering as if they were at rock concerts.

They talk about other people in 'the business' as if they are separate and better than the outsiders who haven't joined and prefer that you spend time with the evolved few that they are rather than the stagnant non-distributors in the outside world who are yet to be converted.

Freaky. They worship the god of Money.

My family lost a lot of friends because they had to try to sign them up and bring them to meetings and their commitment was questioned by their upline if they didn't bring enough 'prospects' (that's what potential new members are called).

That's a lot like a cult don't you think?

Well, when you consider that any time that anything any group does or says is to be kept secret and 'hidden' from the rest of the world, it fits the true definition of the word 'cult', I would have to say yes, yes, yes, and yes.

I have participated in cult court cases, where if I reveal any of the facts about those cases I risk punishment by both fine and incarceration.

I have participated in religious ceremonies which are closed off to the rest fo the world, behind virtually locked and guarded doors, however, which are NOT cultish.. because it is not our intention to keep our sayings and behaviors hidden from anybody, but, to keep those who are less likely to understand from misunderstanding.

Give me enough time to prepare a person properly for any of those kinds of meetings, and they don't walk in and freak out when we discuss things of a biblical nature in the kinds of extreme settings we use, in order to better represent the cultural surrounds of those who origiated the messages that we discuss.

Anybody who follows the Savior's counsel to pray in secret, fast in secret, and make donations in secret, is also in a cult.

Anybody who tries to imply anything other than something that is meant to be hidden and kept secret, by using the word 'cult', however, is using the word incorrectly, purely out of ignorance..

So, now that you know, you can stop worrying about Catholicism and the Watchtower Societ, and Mormons, and the like.

They ARE cults.. every bit as much as the Savior intended anyone espousing his teachings to be.

Any so-called Christian, who doesn't participate in a cult, isn't really following Christ's teachings, and is therefore, not really a Christian.

I was brought up as a Jehovah's witness. They of course would deny they are a cult, claiming instead to be the only true religion in the world! But cult they are, with all the repeatedly failed prophesies, truly bizarre doctrines, crackpot founders and leaders, brainwashing and demands for total unquestioning obedience. It was horrible, and although I got out as soon as I was old enough, it cost me my inheritance, and you could say it stole my childhood.

Yes. Boston Movement Church of Christ. They are very different from the Church of Christ. They are an offshoot of this group. Nothing I have to say pertains to the Church of Christ - only to the Boston Movement offshoot which has completely separated from them. They are religious fanatics - zealots to the extream. The leadership is top heavy with leaders who demand blind obedience. Beatings are common for males who comit infractions of the codes of conduct. I don't mean 1 on 1. I mean 20 on 1.They are more tolerant with the women. The services are heavy on singing, fellowship & hugging. Careful records are kept on who contributes how much money & you will be embarrised in a group situation if your contribution is not up to expectation. You are taught, guided & supervised on how & when to pray & what to pray for. You will actively & constantly recruit new members or you will not be in the good graces of the group. Dating is encouraged & supervised. It is not unusual for prayer groups to meet daily before the sun comes up. Disagreement or expression of a different opinion is not tolerated. You are expected to give all that you have - time, money & support to all church activities. You are expected to purge yourself by spilling your guts about all misdeeds committed in your lifetime. This can be used against you at a later time if it is deemed necessary. The goal is to be first at everything - give the most money, time, recruit the most members, spout the most gospel, (that is chosen for you). Second best is the first loser. Getting out is not easy. I had to say, "I'm out. If you kill me, that's OK. I'll still be out." So, they let me go after a group of guys came out to intimidate me. I looked at them for a while, then turned around to leave. They didn't try to stop me. That wasn't the end of it. I went through voluntary deprograming to get my life back. It's over now.

I was raised in a cult. Jehovah's Witnesses. It was horrible. They keep you from communicating with people outside of the church, well as friends anyway because they are 'worldly'. I grew up isolated from other kids at school and wasn't allowed to go visit in their houses or anything. They teach you to believe only in t heir doctrines and forbid any exploration into another belief.
