I've a 94 Honda Accord Station Wagon. My family mechanic wants to charge me $150 and he's about 12 miles from here but the Good Year around the corner will charge me $130. I'm sure it sounds like an oxymoron but what do you think?

In my shop I would charge $50.00 labor.

Shoe set would be around $30.00
Drums (if needed) would be around $35.00 each.
Turning drums (if needed) $20.00 each.
So $80.00 to $150.00 would be the range.

On a 94, there is a good chance wheel cylinders (the hydraulics) will need replacing. That could add a further $100 bucks or so.

My advice--------You trust your "family mechanic" don't you?
That's where you should go.

That price is very reasonable if it includes new brake drums. If not, shop or call other repair or service places.

The true definite finished cost can only be ascertained after the job as there are many variables such as: Wheel cylinders, return and hold down springs, brake drums, wheel bearings and the price of shoes themselves. The items above other than the shoes may or need to be replaced.

I spent over $400 on my rear brakes a few years ago. But that included new drums, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, backing plates & springs.
If the $20 difference would make you or break you, go with Good Year. But to keep in good relations with the family mechanic, go with them..........
