People take this life serious for lots of reasons but the main one is perhaps loneliness. I personally just like answering peoples questions because it is better than housework.

The virtual world is as "tangible" as you allow it to be.

What I mean by that is, the internet is only another "resource;" another form of communication, just like the telephone, radio, TV, or a handwritten letter.

You can communicate REAL, GENUINE, SINCERE emotions through any communication resource.

My experience here are Yahoo Answers is that - depending on the category - the crap can outnumber the genuine by 9 to 1. Since there are no "guarantees" here, you have to be mature enough and have a good enough intuition to choose the genuine from the fake. Most of the time, it isn't that hard to do.

So, what I'm saying is, this is just a resource, and can be used for good or ill; it can be useful, or just another way for monkeys to throw dung.

Over the years, i found a few things.
In small country towns, interaction with other were Pubs.
The telegraph of the country town. Drinking with old farmers finding out whats happening not only now but what happened 20 years ago.

young people don't listen now, or respect others older than them.
The pubs that were once the central interaction are now limited due to the drink drive levels.
sure this is a good thing, less drunken drivers on the roads..
and all that..

The only places people are aloud to express themselves without getting into trouble with the law is in the home.
So we become caged.

Unless we assimilate with the law. Become one and no question our rights or anything else for that matter..
Pay out taxes and exists so government is happy, the law makers are happy.

People will always reach out,,
Be it in anonymous letter writing (old age),
Internet (this age) or totally acting out. every age. from the 60s to 2000

The internet is a way to express what is on your mind right then and there.
It might not always be correct but its a way that isnt policed as strongly as other means.

You're right.

I tend to be shy. The internet is an easier forum to interact than in person. I would never approach a stranger in the grocery store & tell them my philosophical ideas (I wouldn't even approach someone & say hello!) but I feel comfortable to spill my mind here for strangers. There's a safe anonymity to it. Maybe it's because I'm a control freak & this is an easier way to feel in control. I'm safe to say whatever I like here. The worst that can happen is that someone doesn't like it. The best that can happen is that someone actually likes my answer & chooses it as the best! That rocks!

People find it easier to communicate in text than in person. I have a few people that I'm very close to & I'm certainly not shy with them, but when I'm among others that I don't know well I tend to be very quiet & reserved. I'm introverted & introspective. Sometimes it's hard for me to come out of my shell.

Although, now that I think of it, if a stranger came up to me & asked me some of the questions that I find here, I would still answer, the same way that I do here! It's just highly unlikely that a total stranger would ask me the meaning of life or anything like that out of the blue! That would be pretty cool if they did!

We are a timid race, us humans. Even people that consider themselves bold & outgoing often hide their true feelings & thoughts because they don't want to be vulnerable. We are a fear-driven society.

A lot of people are meeting on the internet because it's easier than meeting someone in person. People are able to break the ice & open up so much sooner than they would if meeting the conventional way. People find it easier to type words onto a screen than to say them out loud. You reach a certain level of intimacy much sooner that way. Though people must be careful since there are some bad folks who will lie & say what you want to hear. There are predators who fabricate identities to lure people under false pretenses.

Anyway, yes you're right it is rather sad that we'll ignore each other on the street & then sit in front of our computers & type to each other instead...but at least it's an interaction of sorts.
For me it's a nice way to survive my lengthy workday (I only have the internet at work).

One of the good things is being able to lure v. intelligent and informed people to your site just by dangling the carrot of ten points in front of them. Also the smugness you feel when you have something sussed a bit better than someone else. You also find out what's going on in your mind. It's like an interactive diary.
I think it's the intangibles we are after: surprise, delight, exhilaration, etc

To be taken seriously something doesnt have to be tangible; even the thoughts we exchange are intangible. Intangible things are way more valuable and meaningful. As for social interaction the online world allows interaction and does not really stop anyone from interacting unless they prefer to do so themselves.

Because for some reason or another, they are handicapped in perceiving the "otherness" of the real world in relation to their self or "ego."

The metaphysical moment of "objective-reality-ness," as the *primary essence* of the objectively real, that makes it understandable as something distinct from ourselves, cannot be properly seen due to some epistemological impairment within the person|

Much public school education and university education can do this, as so often what is taught is so screwy and out of touch with reality, that the students coming out are confused as to what is real and what is not|

What they are getting there, in most cases, is certainly not education in the classically understood sense of the term|

I've always thought that too, its like people who get so engrossed in the soap opera world and start to beleive the actors are their characters, they forget it is make believe and just entertainment as all internet worlds are.
They should never be taken to seriously and people should never be believed 100% as you can be anything you want to be in the online world we are the actors of this world.
For me it is pure entertainment and fills a bordeom gap and even then I still get bored of the internet.

Do we tell blind people that light does not exist, do deaf people believe sound does not exist?

What we know of the real world is interpreted through our senses.

Did you know that our ears magnify sound to make it 20 times louder than it really is?

When we talk to our (never seen) grandmother in Ausralia on the telephone, is she real?

So what really is real?

We can only say that what we sense is real to us.

How can you say "this world that doesn't really exist"?.

Maybe some of us just wish it didn't really exist.

No!!!
You are correct.
We need to try to think a little bit more before we answer, and we need to write because we believe that, and not for the points.
There r same people that make wonderful q, with meaning and not only q for just making it.
Not everything needs 2 b answer with jokes!!
Their are same very serious thing/problems in our world, and we need to think before we answer.
