it is an alternative to Microsofts Internet Explorer.
It runs basically the same, but most websites are designed to maliciously take advantage of Internet Explorer users, so it can provide a degree of security, albeit not that large. It is safe to download form a known source, like www.download.com, or directly from their website.

IE uses 'active x' which allows websites to install software on your computer. As you can imagine, some sites use it to install trojans/spyware so you end up with pop ups, unwanted ads, and browser hijacks - thats when no matter what you type, your browser goes to the site that hijacked it.
Active X is a technology owned by Microsoft, they don't allow other browsers to use it - so that makes them safer on the internet.

Firefox and Opera re less prone to spyware infections and hacking, but still not completely foolproof. Its always a good idea to add Spywareblater and Spybot S&D.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

It is a free to use web browser designed to try and break Microsofts dominance with internet explorer, it has a lot of useful add-ons you can download. It is perfectly safe to download and it beats internet explorer in many areas. I've been using it for a year now and find it far better than explorer, particularly as it is less prone to crashing when you mistype a URL
