A firewall is a software that's blocking hacker attacks on your computer, but not viruses!!!
Go to http://www.wikipedia.org and enter "Firewall" in the search bar, everything is explained there very well.
Or go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall_(networking)

A firewall is a software application used by networks and Internet users to help block hackers abusing their network / personal computer. That's the definition.

If you are using Windows XP goto Start>Control Panel and look on the last row of icons you should see Windows Firewall. Click on it. You should have 3 options, the last one is the one you want. Just click on it then do whatever it is you need to do but remember to turn it back on. It's a safety thing.

A firewall is a software that monitors all your network traffic. It is used primarily from preventing a system from being hacked into.
To disable a firewall you only need to shut down the program that is loaded during system startup. Right-click on your firewall icon in your system icon and you will find an option to exit/shut down the firewall.
To put it back on simply run the application.
