Hi,
I started on my birth control pills late, on 5th day of my menstrual cycle. According to the instructions, i should use other contraception methods for 7 days, and then i should be protected as normal.

Now, on the 8th day I had unprotected sex, I asked a doctor if i would be protected by the pills like the packet had said or should i have waited longer. He suggested morning after pill just in case. So i have taken that now.

I'm just wondering if i have unprotected sex any time soon with my partner while taking my BC pills normally + having taken the morning-after pills. I should be protected til i get my next period?

Thanks!!

7 consecutive days on the pill should be enough to protect you.

Although 7 days is usually all it takes, to err on the side of caution some doctors recommend that you use an alternative form of contraception for the rest of the entire cycle if you do start more than 2 days later than the correct day.

The most common cause of pill failure is either starting late or missing pills towards the end of a cycle.

Starting late means that you may ovulate before the pill is taken or within the first few days after you start.

Missing pills towards the end of the packet in the belief that it doesn't matter because your period is due soon, may mean that the pill free (placebo) time will go longer than 7 days, and ovulation may occur in the following month.

Neither method is 100% so even after the 7 days there's always a chance.

I really don't think it's possible you are pregnant but if you are not taking them at the same time every day or something you may be slightly more at risk. Use a condom for a week or two and then enjoy the fact you are being sensible with your choices and go mad!
