Apparently it's simply day. But think about what you see: a sunset, darkness, a sunrise; think about what some animals and plants do: they prepare themselves for the night before the total solar eclipse. In the end, if you saw one, think about how you felt.

I think all of the others are wrong. The Moon goes through a day/night cycle just like the Earth, except that it is much longer, i.e.29 earth days to go through one cycle. During a total eclipse of the sun, it is the Moon's "night" that you are immersed within, since you are in the Moon's shadow. So the answer is that it is night, but it is the Moon's night, not the Earth's. So there!

I watched the London 1999 solar eclipse (almost total) and had the same impression too. I was inside a park and towards the (almost) totality, the birds kept quite and there was a sudden breeze so I had to put my jumper on. I guess you could call it 'transient night', still a day overall :-)

You don't see a sunset or a sunrise during an eclipse.

It's just a shadow passing in front of the light source.

Of course it is day.

It would have to be day time, because if it was at night, there would be no sun for the moon to block out. It just gets dark as night for a few minutes.

it's still day...

it just gets dark because the sun's light was obstructed.
other than that, it happened in daylight. so it's still day.

what would you call it if it was a lunar eclipse?
