The Book of Enoch 31:4, purporting to be written by the antediluvian prophet Enoch, describes the Tree of Knowledge: "It was like a species of the Tamarind tree, bearing fruit which resembled grapes extremely fine; and its fragrance extended to a considerable distance. I exclaimed, How beautiful is this tree, and how delightful is its appearance!" In the Talmud, Rabbi Meir says that the fruit was a grape. Another Talmudic tradition suggests that Eve actually made, and drank, wine.
Also in the Talmud, Rabbi Nechemia says that the fruit was a fig.Adam and Eve used fig leaves to cover themselves after eating the fruit (Genesis 3:7). Perhaps this was because the leaves were nearby, or perhaps it shows God creating the cure before the illness, i.e. the same tree that caused the problem was then used to remedy it. Another explanation lies within the "fruit" of the fig tree, the fig itself, which is not actually a fruit but rather a flower of sorts, serving as the tree's genitalia.
Another Talmudic interpretation, expressed by Rabbi Yehuda, is that the fruit was wheat.
In Western Christian art, the fruit is most commonly depicted as an apple. One possible reason for this would arise from a medieval pun if it were shown that a source of humor to monks lay in consonance of the Latin words for evil and for apple, and thus by eating the malus (apple), Eve contracted malum (evil). There is, however, no textual or historical evidence by which to argue the usage of this image.
Proponents of the theory that the Garden of Eden was located somewhere in what is known now as the Middle East suggest that the fruit was actually a pomegranate. This ties in with the Greek myth of Persephone, where her consumption of seven pomegranate seeds leads to her having to spend time in Hades.
Ethno-botanists have proposed the iboga plant (Tabernanthe iboga) as the Tree of Knowledge. The bark of the root contains a dissociative substance, ibogaine, which has been traditionally used in Bwiti religious ceremony in Central Africa. Other hallucinogens, in particular the Fly agaric mushroom, have also been proposed as the Tree

It was the pair.
This is a trick question folks, and a pair of humans, namely Adam and Eve were the only human inhabitants of Paradise.
Read your sources for this story and you'll find the apple is not mentioned. The only description we have of what Eve ate is "the fruit of the tree of knowledge"! It may have been a fig, durian or breadfruit for all we know.
And also no snake is mentioned, only a serpent. This could be anything from a salamander to a tuatara, or--if you live in this country (where we have four types of serpents), it could be a used car salesman, a chartered accountant, a lawyer or a politician.

Neither the apple on the tree or the pair created the trouble. It was satan who came and spoke as a snake to Eve. Satan is a liar and he told a lie and deceived EVE that if they eat it they will become like GODS while they were already in GODS GLORY. They were naked but clothed in God's glory. But after they disobeyed they understood they were naked, it means they lost God's glory that clothed them.
Even today Satan is deceiving people into believing what is not true about God. Those who fall for his word have no hope whatsoever.

Neither! It was Adam and Eve eating from the apple, or fruit tree they were told NOT to eat from. If you tell a child not to eat a biscuit and they go ahead and eat a biscuit, what was the source of the trouble? The biscuit? The child eating the biscuit they were told not to eat? The answer has to be in the disobedience of the one who commits the act!

The supreme being, the creator, preserver and destroyer is also a great story teller. He will devise one way or another. We can spend years analyzing his purpose - but we will not find an answer to his mysterious ways.
You want to learn more. Try to read and understand what did Guru Nanak say about the creator in Japji Sahib.

As the myth goes, neither.. The snake that tempted Eve to eat of the tree of knowledge is the culprit.

First i would like to say to dear Oliver T that according to you it was God's fault to have that tree in His garden but according to me de real fault was dat God made you.
Dear Manoj, it has been human nature to go against God's wish and they (Adam & Eve) were the first humans on earth, so how could they do God's will. It was all the couple's fault.

It was f.ucking God's fault for being such a retarded bas.tard in the first place. I mean, come on, why didn't he just chop down the tree, make some cider and kick the sh.it out of the snake?
Addendum for Ruchi L:
You don't want to go there my friend. People with slightly bigger brains than you have tried and failed on so many occasions that it's embarrassing.
The point is, sh.it for brains, that you are right; it IS God's fault He made me, which in turn proves my point that the whole theory is retarded! If He's all powerful and all knowledgeable then the outcome of having sarcastic genii such as myself picking holes in His divinely pathetic story is a natural result and He, being all powerful should have foreseen it and therefore not allowed it to occur!!! Don't strain yourself trying to work this out, for I know it's beyond you.
